NaMo again : What Delhi university students want from him ?
The results of the mahakumbh of 2019, the general elections are out after a fierce political battle of seven phase of elections between Political parties. The swearing in of NaMo for the consecutive time has made the bhakts and other followers of modi go out of jubilation and those opposing him are pulling their socks again to criticize him. After all, criticizing is an important ingredient in a healthy democracy. Just like salt which makes food tasty , the spice of criticizing makes politics interesting.
But what does the government mean for a student. For him whether Modi will remove sedition laws or not , whether he will amend AAFSA might also matter to an extent but what affects him/her directly is what government plans for employment , educational curriculum etc.
This article is about one of the most important educational Institution of India , the Delhi university. The Modi government has to answer a plethora of questions like making adhoc teachers permanent, security specially women security in the campus, paucity of seats in college hostels, unregulated rent of PG's , freedom of expression with the students , privatization of Delhi University, saffronisation of syllabus etc. These are the demands after which DU students have organized protests, held rallies from red fort to parliament street, sat on hunger strikes , dismantled classes. The new government has to surely answer these questions if it plans to keep the distinction of Delhi University as a premier institution.
A student of Ramjas college , Archit singh says ‘ There is no undergraduate hostel for boys in DU and college hostels have a negligible number of seats compared to the number of students. My college has 120 hostel seats and there are approximately 6000 students in the college. I expect from the government to increase hostel seats as many students like me can’t really afford unregulated rent of PG's'. This is a general story of thousands of DU students. PG owners are raising rent every year which makes it problematic for many students. Building undergraduate hostels will ensure that the students get cheap and affordable living conditions. Such hostels will also increase safety of the students. ‘there are total 13 professors in my department while the cap is of 25 professors. The government should recruit more teaching staff specially for courses like science. The government should always recruit ad hoc teachers as permanent teaching staff' says Vishal Singh a student of Ramjas college , department of Political Science.
Shefali verma , a student of Hindu college is of the opinion that ‘ security in the campus is of vital importance. It is the duty of government to ensure a safe and secure campus night life to the students. Many parents have a fear in their mind that Delhi is unsafe for girls and don’t send their daughters to study in Delhi. This curtails their life options.’ Students have no direct impact with Government patting it’s back for making Masood Azhar a global terrorist , they want that they can live a secure life in the campus.
Students have raised questions over the government's idea of not allowing freedom of expression. The recent Incident of Ramjas college where the administration had refused to accept political articles in its magazine raises questions over the governments idea. One has complete right to raise and question the authorities over what feels like against the spirit of students activism.
Talking to some senior students who have passed out of DU, it was ascertained that these problems are something which is not just a present government's failure but precious governments have also failed to find accurate solutions to these issues.
Therefore, the mandate is out , the government has been formed and is going to be in power for the next 5 years. A student who is in second year will have this government deciding his fate until he/she completes his college. Hence , a failure of the government in not providing anything what a DU student necessarily demands will surely challenge the government in the 2024 battle.
