THE 'UNTOUCHABLE' INDIA
In the seventh decade of constitutional India, if we come to know that an inebriated person burnt a 90 year old dalit in our country which caused his demise, we will have to call our vast country as "THE UNTOUCHABLE INDIA".
A common feature in both pre colonial and post colonial India was the brutal behavior of our society towards backward classes. They were discarded from going into public spaces especially temples, had to keep their footwear on their head while passing by an upper caste community, they were the poorest of the poor & were considered below the salt.
What caused immense misery were the rights not being implemented after the laws were made for their upliftment. They became center of caste politics by almost every politician of independent India yet they remained disadvantaged. Niether Mayawati nor Mulayam and even Nitish and Lalu have fulfilled the demands of these victims of poverty.
Reservation in jobs, politics, educational institutions were the need of the hour which was fulfilled by the Mandal Commission of 1989. The problem then also existed as the dalits were not able to reach to the educational level where they can avail reservation benefits due to lack of minimum education. The educational infrastructure of rural India is pathetic which is evident from the fact that the country spends only 5% of its GDP on infrastructure. The people living in the chawls and slums mainly from the dalit community; their hands are skinny due to malnutrition tanned due to unavailability of clothes and shelter.
The preamble of our country signifies India as a Sovereign, Secular, Socialist, Democratic Republic but the atrocities against dalits kill the sole purpose of our constitution. Just writing laws on a piece of paper is not enough, its implementation plays a significant role. If the attempts for the betterment of dalits increase, the day is not day for our country to stop reservation as the gap between the privileged and the unprivileged will be reduced. Our country is in need of more dalit candidates in bureaucracy than in political system.
Dr Ambedkar's soul will rest in peace when every dalit will have clothes, shelter, food and every basic facility which a dalit was hitherto not provided, dalit will become UPSC, NEET, CA, MBBS toppers. In the words of Mahatama Gandhi ' the dalits have played a major role in country's independence and will be playing in strengthening India in coming times'. We have to follow the ideology of calling untouchable 'HARIJANS- child of god' to pay tribute to Gandhi on 2nd of October not by constructing Statues. We can celebrate our Republic Day when each and every dalit will not face discrimination not by inviting Barack Obama, Al Nahayan, Fransico Olando or even the newly elected Trump. An equal society will be a testimony to the constitution makers on the republic of our country.
The contribution from them is the key for a nation that aims to become a developed country with no more goals to eradicate poverty.
